Public auction offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to conduct “Sleigh Ride” alongside the orchestra at its annual Holiday Classics concert
RICHARDSON, Texas (November 3, 2026) – Ever wondered what it feels like to stand before a symphony orchestra and lead a performance? The Richardson Symphony Orchestra (RSO) is giving one lucky community member the chance to find out – no musical experience required.
The RSO’s annual Guest Conductor Auction is now open, inviting members of the public to bid for the opportunity to step onto the podium and conduct Leroy Anderson’s beloved holiday favorite, Sleigh Ride, during the orchestra’s Holiday Classics concert on Saturday, December 5th, at 7:30 p.m. The festive performance will also feature the Plano Civic Chorus.
For last year’s winner, Diana Cooley, the experience was one to remember. “The orchestra was all so kind… and you all made it so much fun. It truly was a highlight of my life,” Cooley said.
Past guest conductors have been as young as 4 years old, proving that anyone can have their moment in the spotlight. Whether it’s a lifelong dream, the perfect gift for a young music lover, or simply a chance to try something new, the Guest Conductor Auction offers a one-of-a-kind experience— and all for a good cause.
Proceeds from the auction will directly support the Richardson Symphony Orchestra’s community outreach initiatives, including Symphony Days, which brings live orchestral music and music education to over 4,000 local third-grade students each year, and Healing Notes, which bring live music to hospitals, senior living centers, and other community settings.
“There’s something truly special about experiencing a symphony orchestra from the podium,” said Laurie Garvie, Executive Director and President of the RSO. “We love giving members of our community the chance to step into that role, make a memory they’ll never forget, and support programs that bring the joy of music to people throughout North Texas.”
The winning bidder will receive the opportunity to conduct Sleigh Ride with the Richardson Symphony Orchestra during Holiday Classics, sharing the stage with professional musicians in front of a full concert audience.
The Holiday Classics concert takes place Saturday, December 5th, at 7:30 p.m. at the Charles W. Eisemann Center in Richardson, featuring the Richardson Symphony Orchestra and Plano Civic Chorus.
