Celestial Celebration: Music, Art, and Technology

September 7, 2019 at 8:00 pm

The RSO is collaborating with the School of Arts, Technology, and Emerging Communication (ATEC) at UT Dallas on the creation of a multimedia performance and installation inspired by 50th year anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing.

This project was made possible due to the generous support of Ann and Charles Eisemann through their Arts Innovation Initiative, which was developed to encourage collaboration between the arts leaders in our community.

The RSO will perform Josef Strauss’ Music of the Spheres, Claude Debussy’s Claire de Lune, and Gustav Holst’s The Planets, which will feature a female chorus from the Richardson Community Chorale.

The ATEC faculty and students will present 9 video pieces that will accompany the RSO’s orchestral performance. The video components incorporate data visualizations of astrophysical phenomena. The visualizations are original creations by renowned artist/technologist Dr. Donna Cox and her Advanced Visualization Lab at the National Center for Supercomputer Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana. Dr. Cox will be hosted by ATEC as the 2019 ATEC Artist-in-Residence. Dr. Cox will give a presentation about her work during the week before the performance.
